Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace — A Deep Dive
The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace in London is the working stables of the British monarch — the working equine arm of the Royal Household. State coaches, ceremonial carriages, and the horses used in royal duties are stationed here. The Mews is open to the public for guided tours through most of the year.
History
The Royal Mews has been part of the royal household since at least the 14th century, originally at the Tower of London. The current site at Buckingham Palace dates from 1825.
State Coaches
The Gold State Coach (used at coronations), the Diamond Jubilee State Coach (used at jubilees), the Australian State Coach, and the Glass Coach — all on display.
Working horses
The Mews stables the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays used for state ceremonial duties — typically 30+ horses at any time.
Public tours
Tours run March-November; closed during state ceremonial use. Self-guided audio tours with stable staff present to answer questions.
Harness Rooms
Working harness rooms with state-ceremony harness on display.
Coronation Coach
The Gold State Coach (1762) is the most magnificent state coach in the world. Last used at the Coronation of Charles III in 2023.
